The Healthy Schools programme

This is a whole school initiative and is central to all that we do at St. Joseph’s.

Pupils, staff, parents and governors are involved in developing policies and curriculum materials.

The Healthy schools programme has five main themes.

These themes will be covered by a wide variety of subjects, assemblies, tutorials and whole day events.

1 Relationships and Sex Education

The schools new policy has recently been approved by the Governors.

Year 7 have a day induction conference in which they look at relationships and attend workshops on: Mind/Body/Spirit and the Environment.

Relationships and Sex education is the subject of a whole day conference in Years 8 and 10. It is also taught in RE and Science.

2 Drugs Education

The Healthy schools team wrote a new policy last year and to implement this, the whole school follows the “Teaching drugs extensively” scheme. There are four tutorials on this topic each year.

Pupils in Year 9 attend a drama workshop on the dangers of alcohol.

Pupils in Year 10 participate in activities around No Smoking Day.

3 Healthy eating

A whole school policy on this is being developed at the time of writing.

This theme is taught in food technology and science. It forms the basis of the excellent food provided by the kitchen staff for breakfast, break and lunch.

4 Physical activity

All pupils in years have the opportunity to take part in three lessons of Physical Education each week.

As a sports college we have excellent facilities and there are many opportunities to take part in extra –curricular activities. Specialist coaches are also used.

The school is working with Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS trust on an Exercise and Health survey. Pupils who volunteer to help wear a pedometer for a week and their exercise regime recorded. The study aims to assess if there is a correlation between obesity and the amount of exercise.

5 Emotional Health and well being, including bullying

As a Catholic school we are all responsible for looking after the health and well being of our neighbours.

Our pastoral system is based on form tutors, managers of learning, councillors, TAs and senior teachers, who are always available to give support and advice.
